Euryhaline fish (marine and freshwater) with regularly ossified skeleton. Narrow and small body. Especially wide head. Caudal fin is forked. It has a characteristic silver line on both sides of the body. Dorsum is grey, with black spots on the edge of the scales. It can measure up to 18 cm.
