Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Body moderately wide and quite deep. The eyes are big. Upper jaw prominent, and chin well visible. 3 dorsal fins, whose bases overlap. Grayish or reddish brown back. Yellowish flanks and white belly. It measures up to 45 cm and weighs up to 2.5 kg.
