Freshwater fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Body elongate, compressed. Head with concave snout profile, lower jaw prominent; opercule with one spine. Lateral line extends onto caudal peduncle, reaching posterior margin of fin. Dorsal fin bipartite with several spines on the first part; 1 spine and several soft rays on the second. Anal fin with spines and soft rays. Caudal fin rounded. Colour: Body uniformly silvery or dark greyish-blue dorsally, greyish-silver on flank and ventrally. Fins greyish. Interior of eye visibly yellowish. Maximum size up to 200 cm and maximum weight: 200 kg.
