It features an upper eye that is less than its own diameter from the dorsal profile of the head. The anterior nostril on the blind side is not enlarged. The dorsal fin begins before the eyes and consists of 50-58 rays. On the eyed side, the pectoral fin has 5-6 unbranched rays and is absent on the blind side. The number of rays in the anal fin varies between 40-45. The caudal fin is separate from the last rays of the dorsal and anal fins. The eyed side exhibits a greyish or reddish-brown colouration.
