Bivalve mollusc with a long, narrow shell, resembling a razor. Its shell can reach lengths of up to 20 centimetres or more. It has a smooth and shiny outer surface, usually brown or grey in colour, with darker stripes or markings. The anterior end of the shell tends to be narrower and pointed, while the posterior end is wider and rounded. It lives buried in the sand in shallow intertidal and subtidal zones, where it feeds by filtering suspended organic particles in the water.
