Spotted-fin rockfish

Order Perciformes
Family Scorpaenidae

It is characterized by a robust, laterally compressed body, with a large and wide head in comparison to body size. The mouth is large and equipped with strong conical teeth, adapted for efficient prey capture. Eyes are moderate in size and situated on the top of the head. A distinguishing feature is the bony spines present in various parts of the body, including the dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins, as well as the operculum. The skin is covered in rough scales that often feature dermal spines, giving it a spiky and rugged appearance. Its colouration ranges from reddish to brown and yellow hues, with patterns of spots and stripes providing camouflage in its marine environment. The dorsal and anal fins are prominent and supported by sharp spines, while the pectoral fins are comparatively smaller. This species is commonly found in rocky and sandy bottoms in shallow waters of the Northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
