Family Berycidae

Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Oval and compressed body. Large head, slightly larger than a third of the total length, with large round eyes. Large oblique mouth with prominent lower jaw. It has a single short dorsal fin and a very low caudal fin. Bright red coloration in body, fins and head, being the flanks lighter. Common size 20-30 cm and maximum of 50 cm.
