Fish with an elongated and laterally compressed body, featuring a relatively large head and a terminal mouth. Its eyes are of medium size and located on the top of the head. It has a single, long dorsal fin, as well as well-developed pectoral and ventral fins. Its colouration is silvery, with darker shades on the dorsal side and lighter shades on the ventral side. It is characterized by having ten soft rays in the dorsal fin, which gives it its scientific name 'decadactylus'. This fish reaches lengths of up to 40 centimetres. It is common in coastal waters and is mainly found on sandy or muddy bottoms, where it feeds on small crustaceans and fish.
