Sand sole
Flatfish whose dorsal and anal fins have the last ray joined by a low membrane to the base of the caudal fin. The supratemporal branch of the lateral line forms an arch, and the anterior nostril on the blind side stands out as prominent, creating a round rosette with a diameter equivalent to that of the eye. The lower lip on the ocular side exhibits undulations with about six lobes. The length of the nasal tubes and scales above them on the ocular side is approximately equal. The pectoral fin on the ocular side has a black spot with a white margin, except at its base, and this spot is often interrupted by a clear space or accompanied by dots or streaks on one side or the other (phenomenon present in fresh specimens from the coast of Israel). Regarding color, the sand sole displays hues ranging from yellowish-brown to reddish-brown, with pale spots and indistinct specks..
