Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Body elongated and compressed. Mouth wide. Head with several spines. Spines on the preoperculum are flattened, the ventral spines downward pointing. Scales on lateral line. Dorsal fin has numerous strong spines and soft rays. Anal fin with a few spines and several soft rays; pectoral fin with soft rays. Colour bright red except for the belly which has pink or rose flush, and a dusky area on posterior part of opercle. Maximum size: 100 cm. Maximum weight: 15 kg.
