Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Oval body, elongated, high and compressed. Pointed nose. Teeth of two types: incisive incisors, directed forward and frequently peeking outwards, and molars. Bright silver grey color, with darker head and back, with 12-13 black cross bands, alternating in width and intensity. A black spot on the caudal peduncle, in the shape of a saddle. A black spot on the axilla of the pectoral fins. Fins dorsal, caudal and anal greyish, with black border. Up to 50 cm in length.
