Periwinkle

Order Littorinimorpha
Family Littorinidae

Gastropod mollusk featuring a spiraled, cone-shaped shell of variable colour, typically ranging from grey to brown, with dark bands. The modest-sized shell protects a muscular body and a head housing sensory tentacles. It possesses a specialised structure called an operculum that allows it to seal the opening of its shell when retracted. Its muscular foot enables attachment to rocky surfaces, resisting the forces of waves during high tides. This herbivorous mollusk primarily feeds on algae and detritus, and its unique morphology reflects its adaptations to survive in the changing intertidal conditions.
