Deep-sea fish with an elongated, laterally compressed body. It has a large head with a terminal mouth and small eyes situated on the top of the head. Its skin is rough and scaly, with shades ranging from pale orange to intense red and dark brown. It has well-developed pectoral and dorsal fins, as well as a bifurcated caudal fin. Its size may vary, but adults typically reach between 30 and 60 centimetres in length.
