Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Head very bulky and crushed. Body with conical trunk. Very large, broad, semicircular mouth with prominent lower jaw and strong, sharp and curved teeth. Variable coloration, reddish or grayish brown with dark spots and lighter belly (whitish or ocher). It is distinguished from the white monkfish (L. piscatorius) by the black color of its peritoneum, visible through the skin. Maximum length greater than 100 cm.
