Elongated and laterally compressed body, typically red or pink in colour fading towards the belly. Its streamlined profile is accentuated by a continuous dorsal fin and a long anal fin. The eyes are large, and the mouth is terminal, equipped with sharp conical teeth. The caudal fin is forked, contributing to agile swimming.
