Marine bony flatfish of oval and elongated body. Eyes on the right side, separated by an scaled ridge. Large mouth in a terminal position reaching below the eyes; lower jaw slightly prominent; lateral line almost straight with just an inflection on the pectoral fin; dorsal fin is born on the upper eye and reaches the caudal peduncle without being attached to caudal fin; caudal fin rounded; anal fin also elongated, without being attached to caudal fin; small pectoral fin; ctenoid scales (with toothed border) on the ocular face, ctenoid or cycloid (smooth border) scales on the blind face. Color: ocular face brownish with or without some darker spots; blind face white; fins generally paler. Maximum total length: 82.6 cm. Maximum published weight: 6.4 kg.
