Freshwater fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Body of greenish color, compressed laterally and with a dorsal fin very developed and divided in two different parts. The former with spiny rays and the posterior with soft radii. Big mouth with teeth in the jaws and tongue. The operculum ends with a strong spine. It reaches about 30-40 cm.
