Order

Family
Petromyzontidae
It has an eel-like body without a jaw, featuring a round sucker-like mouth and sharp teeth arranged in numerous consecutive circular rows. Characterized by the presence of 7 gill openings behind the eye and the absence of paired fins. Its body, measuring between 11.4 and 120.0 cm, displays an olive or brown-yellow colour on the dorsal and lateral parts, with prominent black markings; whereas the ventral part is lighter. Adults can reach a wet weight of up to 2.3 kg. In the Great Lakes landlocked populations without access to the sea, the maximum length can be 60 cm. During spawning, males develop a rope-like dorsal ridge extending from the first dorsal fin to the posterior region of the gills, earning them the nickname "corded males." Their dentition includes a supraoral lamina with a bicuspid tooth and an infraoral lamina with 6-10 unicuspid teeth, sometimes bicuspid at the lateral ends.
