Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Elongated and thin body. Wide head, with bony crests on top: well developed jaws, with wide and curved teeth, the lower jaw most prominent and without chin. Colour: steel gray or bluish on back, lighter on sides and silvery white on belly. It weighs up to 11 kg.
