Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Short head, between 2.5 and 2.8 times the standard length. Scales all over the body except lacrimal. Lower jaw very prominent, with a clear prognathism; mouth rather oblique. Colour: dark grey, blackish on dorsum and lighter on belly. Mouth cavity and tongue blackish. A split black mark on the submandibular fold. The maximum registered length is 87 cm.
