Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Solid body with a big head. Somewhat prominent lower jaw with 3 rows of depressible teeth. Rounded preopercle, finely serrate. Dorsal fin strongly spiny. Color: dark brown or reddish with irregular spots. Yellow flanks and belly. It can weigh up to 50 kg.
