Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Body elongated, fusiform, almost cylindrical in the young, without scales, except in the corselet. Two very separate dorsal fins. Second dorsal fin followed by 8 finlets. Anal fin followed by 7 finlets. The end of the pectoral fin reaches or exceeds the vertical that passes through the end of the area without scale with drawings. Caudal peduncle with a central keel on each side. Bright blue-gray color, darker on the back, whitish on the belly. On the back, drawings of irregular oblique black lines, from the end of the first dorsal fin to the tail, above the lateral line. Up to 60 cm in length (A. Thazard) and 50 cm (A. Rochei).
