European sprat

Order Clupeiformes
Family Clupeidae

Its body is elongated and fusiform, with a relatively small head in proportion to the rest of the body and a moderately large terminal mouth. The eyes are of moderate size and located on the upper part of the head. The dorsal and anal fins are long and supported by robust spines, while the pectoral fins are moderately long and triangular. Its body is covered with silver scales and its colouration is generally silver with greenish or bluish hues on the dorsum. This species displays a bifurcated and pointed caudal fin. Additionally, it is characterized by a silvery line along the flanks and the absence of dark spots on its body. These morphological features are significant adaptations for locomotion, feeding, and protection in its marine environment. The lower jaw slightly projects, the gill cover lacks any bony radiating striae, teeth are rarely present on the vomer, and the belly has a strong keel of scutes.
