Bivalve mollusk with a heart-shaped shell featuring a rough and striated exterior, which can range in color from white to dark brown. Typically measuring between 3 and 5 centimeters in length, although some can reach larger sizes. It resides buried in the sand or mud in shallow coastal waters, where it feeds by filtering food particles from the water. It plays a significant role in the diet of some seabirds and is also harvested for human consumption in certain areas.
