Fish of the Trachichthyidae family with an elongated and laterally compressed body, featuring a relatively large head and a terminal mouth equipped with small teeth. Its eyes are of medium size and located on the top of the head. It has a long, single dorsal fin and an anal fin of similar length, both with spines at the front followed by soft rays. The predominant coloration is black or dark brown, with lighter tones on the ventral side. It reaches lengths of up to 50 centimeters. Found in deep waters worldwide, it primarily feeds on fish and crustaceans.
