Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Very elongated, thin, cylindrical. Oval eye. Terminal mouth, oblique, wide. Upper jaw not much less than half the length of the head reaching behind the eyes. Superposition of the lower jaw. Operculum with two flat spines. Small scales, larger scales on the head.
