Its body is elongated and slightly laterally compressed, with a head proportionally large in relation to the rest of the body. The mouth is terminal and equipped with a series of sharp conical teeth, suitable for efficient prey capture. The eyes are relatively large and located on the upper part of the head, providing it with a wide field of vision. It has long dorsal and anal fins, supported by robust spines, while the pectoral fins are moderately long and triangular. The body is covered with small, smooth scales. Regarding its coloration, the comber displays hues ranging from brown to yellow or reddish, with scattered dark spots or stripes along the body, providing effective camouflage in its marine environment. This species can reach considerable sizes, with adult specimens exceeding 50 centimeters in total length.
