Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Long, compressed body with no scales. Only the male has a large but thin line of scales near the origin of the caudal fin. Bearded head, prominent chin. A dorsal fin in the posterior half of the body. Pelvic fins in abdominal position. Forked caudal fin. Pearly white coloration. Anal and caudal fins with black radii. Up to 10 cm in length.
