Freshwater fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Fusiform body, compressed, tall and covered with scales. Protractile mouth, reduced, without teeth in the jaws and with thick lips. 2 pairs of chins. A single dorsal fin. Olivaceous color on dorsum and flanks, and yellow in the belly. Up to 1 m long and up to 32 kg.
