Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Elongated and fusiform body, covered with large scales. Fish of rare appearance by its very big and reflecting eyes, that arrive at the dorsal profile of the head. Snout blunt, eye large. Mouth large, lower jaw equaling or slightly protruding beyond upper jaw. Two dorsal fins, the first with 1 spinous radius and 7 or 8 soft; The second with 1 hard and 9 or 10 soft. Black purplish color. Up to 70 cm in length.
