Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Long and almost cylindrical body. Spiky head and relatively small. Wide mouth, with large teeth and pointed chin, very prominent and with the fleshy tip. Preoperculum totally covered with scales. Two dorsal fins separated and opposite the pelvis and anal. Coloration of greyish whitish silvery grey background, darker on the back, with a golden longitudinal band in the middle of the flanks. It measures up to 1.65 m.
