Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Long and almost cylindrical body. Spiky head and relatively small. Wide mouth, with large teeth and pointed chin, very prominent and with the fleshy tip. Non-scaly preoperculum posterior area. Two dorsal fins separated and opposite the pelvic and anal. The end of the pectoral fins does not reach the origin of the pelvic fins. Coloration of greyish-whitish silvery grey background, darker on the back, with about twenty spots or black transverse strips halfway down the flanks. It measures up to 1.28 m.
