Australian bonito

Order Scombriformes
Family Scombridae

It has a fusiform body slightly compressed laterally, with a relatively large head compared to the body size and a moderately large mouth. Notably, it features a small and bifid interpelvic process and lacks a swim bladder. The laminae of the olfactory rosette, a series of lamellae or folds in the olfactory epithelium located in the fish's nasal cavities, range from 21 to 39. The spleen is large and prominent in lateral view, while the liver exhibits elongated lobes to the left and right, with a short middle lobe. The body is completely covered with very small scales posterior to the corselet. A distinctive feature is the dorsal stripe, which tends to be more horizontal than in other Sarda species and may extend to the belly in some specimens.
