Atlantic cod

Order Gadiformes
Family Lotidae

Its elongated, fusiform body displays a range of silvery to greyish tones on the dorsal and flank areas, while the belly is lighter. With moderate-sized eyes and a terminal mouth equipped with sharp conical teeth, it reflects its predatory nature. It stands out with a singular dorsal fin extending along its back, with the anal fin being shorter. The pectoral fins are moderately long, and the pelvic fins are positioned near the throat. Additionally, the upper jaw protrudes beyond the lower one. Its dorsal coloration is reddish-brown, fading to white ventrally. The posterior areas of the vertical fins exhibit dark tones with pale margins, and the sides feature distinctive marbling. A barbel on the chin surpasses the eye's diameter, and a black spot stands out at the rear of the first dorsal fin. The caudal peduncle is robust compared to the blue ling.
