Fish with an elongated and fusiform body, featuring a relatively small head compared to the size of its body. Its jaws are long and equipped with small conical teeth. It has three dorsal fins, two pectoral fins, and two ventral fins. The colouration varies but is generally in shades of brown or grey on the dorsal side and silver on the ventral side. It can reach sizes of up to 50 centimetres in length. This fish is commonly found in cold Arctic and sub-Arctic waters, where it forms large shoals and primarily feeds on small fish and crustaceans.
