Marine bivalve mollusc. Shell very thick, heavy, box-like. Hinge with a large number of teeth perpendicular to main shell axis, usually of equal size. Sculpture of 34 to 37 radial ribs. Usually with thick, dark periostracum. White inner face, with a pink tone below the hinge.
