Marine fish with regularly ossified skeleton. Fusiform and robust body, thick and tall caudal peduncle. Relatively small scales cover the entire body and the fleshy bases of soft and anal dorsal. Lateral line from the upper angle of the operculum along the whole body, following the upper profile of the same. Big head. Mouth with slight inferior prognathism whose posterior end does not reach the level of the posterior border of the eyes. Small noses, close to the eyes. Preopers with serrated edge. The edge of the opercula presents three spines, without crests. A single dorsal fin. Flow truncated. Anal small base fin, starts with three spines. The ventral are born behind the base of the pectorals. The pectorals are inserted beneath the postero-inferior border of the opercula, they have soft radii only and rounded form, like the soft portion of the dorsal and anal. Color tiled in different shades of gray; Dark vertical bands on the flanks are often evident. The ventral coloration is uniform and of a clearer hue. Dark gray fins uniform.
