Protrusion absent on the dorsal surface of the muzzle. The length of the upper jaw does not show sexual dimorphism. Rigid and soft spines continuous in dorsal fin. Caudal fin truncated. The pectoral, dorsal and caudal fins acquire a reddish color during spawning season. Dorsal fin with numerous black lines.
