Conxemar expresses its concern about a possible European decision against increasing autonomous tariff quotas
- This tool guarantees the supply of raw material for the frozen seafood processing and marketing industry and the maintenance of employment in Spain.
Conxemar, the Spanish Association of Wholesalers, Importers, Exporters and Manufacturers of fish products and Aquaculture, in view of the information from Brussels, wishes to communicate its deep concern and disappointment at an upcoming decision by the European Commission not to extend the autonomous tariff quotas (ATQ). This tool allows the processing industry to import with a reduction or exemption from tariffs, within certain limits, that raw material that is not abundant, or even does not exist, in community fishing grounds.
Conxemar defends an extension of the aforementioned ATQ, very necessary for the supply of the industry and for the continuity of its investments and employment. It should be remembered that the association currently brings together 230 companies, with a turnover of more than €8,700 million and 17,327 direct jobs. A decision by the European Commission against expanding the tariff quotas would have a direct impact on the Spanish industry and would jeopardize both the viability of the business and the maintenance of employment.
Conxemar considers that food sovereignty must be guaranteed in Europe and in Spain, given the growth of the seafood processing industry of other great powers, which may not meet the standards of the European Union. The association aspires to achieve the level playing field, for the free market and equal conditions, as well as defends the signing of new commercial agreements that guarantee the supply of our raw material.
