Conxemar becomes the first spanish association to obtain observer status in the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management
- The approval of Conxemar’s application by the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO) creates a new channel for representing the views of Spain’s seafood processing and transformation in this international forum
- The designation builds on Conxemar’s participation in the 14th Annual Meeting of the SPRFMO in Panama, where it supported measures to ensure the responsible management of jumbo flying squid
Conxemar has been granted observer status in the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO) following the approval of its application by the Organisation’s Members.
This new status enables Conxemar to actively participate in one of the world’s leading international fisheries management forums and to represent the views, expertise and interests of Spain’s seafood processing and transformation industry in discussions on the sustainable management of marine resources.
By joining the SPRFMO as an observer, Conxemar further strengthens its commitment to Regional Fisheries Management Organisations, recently described by the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, as “the backbone of sustainable fisheries“.
A Track Record of International Engagement
Observer status acknowledges Conxemar’s long-standing commitment to promoting fisheries governance based on science, international cooperation and sustainability.
Last March, the association participated in the 14th Annual Meeting of the SPRFMO in Panama City, where it held meetings with delegations from the main coastal States and joined other industry representatives in supporting measures to strengthen the responsible management of jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas). These included the establishment of protected areas and science-based catch limits.
Conxemar’s participation reflects the strategic importance of this species to Spain’s seafood processing and transformation industry. Although Spain does not operate a fishing fleet in this fishery, jumbo flying squid is an essential raw material for many companies in the sector. Its sustainable management is therefore critical to ensuring a stable supply and supporting the long-term viability of industry’s economic activity.
