Euryhaline fish (marine and freshwater) with regularly ossified skeleton. Fusiform body, elongated and compressed on the sides. Head somewhat sharp, whose jaws possess strong teeth. Narrow caudal peduncle and caudal fin slightly forked. Bluish back in adults with red or orange spots.
